A spell to enhance creativity and and receive inspiration. A spell with the Goddess Brigid.

Years ago, I was horribly blocked.

I wanted to write, but couldn’t get words to sit on the page…let alone put something together that would be helpful to anyone.

I read. I scribbled. I typed. I cried.

I did the hard, thankless work of putting together something for others to read.

But I also did Magick.

The Goddess Brigid is commonly known for her associations with the hearth and home, but what many don’t realize is how she is a powerful Goddess of creativity and inspiration.

Among many things, she has been this for me. The spell below was one I created when I was hoping to get closer to Brigid and have her help me with removing some of my sticky-sticky creative blocks.

It worked for me. Perhaps it will for you, too?

The Dangerous Goddess: Exploring Hekate, The Morrigan, and Brigid

Thursday, February 26 – 7 p.m. EST (6pm CST, 5pm MST, 4pm PST)
$22 VIRTUAL. RECORDED. All ticket holders will receive recording.

Originally in-person: It’s moved online!

When is a goddess bad, good, or misunderstood? What if a goddess is a little bit of each? Can a fertility goddess be vengeful? Would a death goddess offer comfort? Contemporary goddess worship is quick to label goddesses as “dark” or “light,” without considering the nuances and context of the era from which they originated. By looking at the powerful contradictions within Brigid, Hekate, and The Morrigan, we will explore the “scarier” parts of these three goddesses, and discuss the importance of becoming comfortable with these aspects both in the goddesses and in ourselves.

The Spell

The Materials:

  • A candle: suggested colors red, white, or gold/yellow. For a small creative spark, use a tea light, a votive, or a small two-hour taper candle, which can be found at most occult stores. For major inspiration, use a seven-day or pull-out jar candle, which can also generally be found at your local or online occult store.
  • A small bowl or cup of earth or salt.
  • A small bowl or cup of clean water in a vessel you can drink from. You’ll be drinking the water to make sure it’s clean!

If you have a trade or passion, consider carving symbols that represent it into your candle: e.g. music notes, a paintbrush, or even a symbol of your nation’s currency. You may also want to gather some of your creative tools (such your actual paint brushes, crochet needles, a pen, etc.) and bring them into the working. Consider carving your name into the candle and don’t hesitate to, using your fingers, dab a bit of your saliva on the candle wick.

Light a beloved incense or other smoke element to settle the energies of the space where you’ll be doing the working. If you don’t have, can’t use, or don’t want to use those elements, a few deep breaths will set the tone, beautifully.

When you are ready, light the candle and say aloud or focus silently on the phrase “I light the flame of inspiration.” Making a triangle shape with your fingers and placing it over your heart, say aloud or chant internally, “Brigid, inspire my heart. Brigid, inspire my soul.” Repeat the phrase as you envision the flame’s energy entering your heart and pulsing through your body with each beat, filling each capillary and cell with Brigid’s inspiration. When you feel the energy has reached its peak, release your hands and stop the chant.

Next, take the bowl of earth or salt into one hand while you tap the bowl or earth particles with the hand. Chant or focus on the words: “Brigid, inspire my patience. Brigid, inspire my strength.” When you feel the energy has reached its peak, stop the tapping and set down the bowl.

Finally, take the cup or bowl of water. Gently rotating the bowl in a circular motion so that the water moves but does not slosh, chant or focus on the words: “Brigid’s inspiration flow through me! Brigid’s inspiration flow through me!” When you feel the energy has reached its peak, drink the water —all of it!—and set down the bowl.

For the last part of the rite, take a series of deep breaths, allowing the air to settle the energy you’ve just raised. If you have a goal in mind for Bardic Brigid’s help, focus on that. If you don’t yet have your creative aspirations identified, now is a good time to allow potential visions of that aspiration to come to mind.

To honor Brigid for her help, consider setting out a cup of tea for her in the coziest space in your home. You can also offer a song, a piece of art, or help someone in need in her honor.

The inspiration may come instantly, or it may emerge in the days to come. It may take even longer. Patience is a key part of the process!
