I want to do a Tarot reading! But do I shuffle just once? Do I shuffle twice? Do I shuffle once between each question? Do I just cut and run? WHAT DOES THE TAROT WANT????

There is no rule about how or when you should shuffle your Tarot cards. Like many aspects of Tarot practice, it comes down to what works for the reader.

But if you’re figuring out what works for you, this might be a helpful guideline:

  • Do a thorough shuffle before laying out your cards for a specific question.
  • If other questions come up that pertain to the same topic as the first question, do a light shuffle or simply cut the deck, but no need to fully re-shuffle.
  • If you switch topics all together (say, you start your reading looking at your love life, and then asking whether you’re going to get that promotion), consider doing a thorough shuffle.
  • If you’re at a party or reading for multiple people, it’s good to do a thorough shuffle between each querrent.

The risks of too much shuffling:

There aren’t many. But here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Damage to the deck. Most decks have pretty solid cardstock and can handle regular bridge riffling. But if you’re doing a LOT of that many times a day, your cards will eventually start to show damage.
  • Obsession and compulsion. If you are someone who struggles with obsessive compulsive tendencies, the idea of a “need” to shuffle a “right” number of times can exacerbate that.

Keep in mind: the cards will arrange themselves as they need to be, whether or not we shuffle.

Shuffling a certain amount, though, has the benefit of clearing our minds…a tool definitely necessary for a good Tarot reading!
