A question for the Tarot: Will they come back?
This is surely the most-asked question in Tarot…and one that people are often most embarrassed to ask.
Listen. We’re all going to wonder about it at some point! Whether it’s a former romantic partner, friend, parent, or even a job wanting you to come back…it’s perfectly natural to wonder!
HERE is the spread I recommend for this common question:

1.) The Terrible Thing They Said Or Did (aka, why they’re gone)
2.) The sorrow they left behind
3.) What your best friend thinks of the situation
4.) What they’ve been up to since the split
5.) How they will treat you if they come back
6.) Will they come back at all?
7.) Do you even want them back?

The Reading In Action:
This querrent had a long-time friend ghost them and was always curious about if there was another chapter to their friendship. See what the cards say, below:

1.) The Terrible Thing They Said Or Did (aka, why they’re gone): The Sun. The Sun indicates a child-like quality. It’s generally a positive card, but in this position, it represents immaturity. The offending party likely sulked off like a child.
2.) The sorrow they left behind: 5 of Wands Reversed. Upright, this card indicates confusion. Reversed, it indicates mess (imagine the characters all dropping their wands)! The former friend’s departure likely deeply frustrated the querrent.
3.) What your best friend thinks of the situation: 9 of Pentacles Reversed. When upright, this card indicates wealth. Reversed, it indicates a lack of wealth. Clearly the querrent’s best friend doesn’t see this ghosting as much of a loss.
4.) What they’ve been up to since the split: The Hierophant Reversed. The loss of this friendship likely affected the offending party more than it affected the querrent. When upright, this card indicates structure and order. Reversed, it indicates feeling lost and confused. The offending party must be quite lost without the querrent.
5.) How they will treat you if they come back: Death Reversed. Death, in this context, generally indicates some kind of closure. But Reversed, the departure hangs over them like a wet blanket. Even if the person did come back, the friendship is likely irrecoverably changed.
6.) Will they come back at all? 6 of Wands Reversed. This one is a little unclear. When upright, the 6 of Wands indicates moving forward with confidence…but in this spread, the card’s position shows the horseman riding OUT of the picture. Yet, the card is Reversed, so it shows the horseman riding INTO the picture…but Reversed, this is a weak position. My interpretation is that the offending party may try to creep back into the querrent’s life, but without any accountability.
7.) Do you even want them back? Page of Swords. The Page of Swords can indicate holding on to anger or frustration, or even setting a boundary. Even if the former friend comes back to the querrent, the querrent would likely just get angry again!
This reading says things are likely better off as they are.
