Are you nervous to connect with a “Scary” Goddess? If you’re scared of Hekate or The Morrigan, this post is for you…

Recently, I was at a book faire when a lovely woman came over to my table. She looked at my titles for my books on Hekate and the Morrigan, but put them both back.
“I’ve been through so much over the years,” she said. “I’m don’t want a Goddess who isn’t going to be hard on me.”
I didn’t agree. But I couldn’t blame her.
Many people avoid certain Goddesses because they will create unwelcome experiences.
Goddesses like The Morrigan and Hekate have reputations for things that are scary: e.g., the Morrigan and battle; Hekate and a shadowy underworld. Some people, perhaps like the aforementioned woman, worry that connecting with Goddesses like Hekate and The Morrigan means opening proverbial doors to scary things.
But what if these Goddesses aren’t the cause these things?
Hekate doesn’t send Persephone to the underworld, but she does go with her and acts as a mother-figure when circumstances send Persephone there.
The Morrigan doesn’t cause the war with the Fomorians, but she does organize her people to fight them, and she fights them as well.
What if so-called “Scary” Goddesses appear to help us navigate things bound to happen, anyway?
In my own journey…
Hekate fully entered my life before I entered a period of deep, lonely grief.
The Morrigan took her place on my altar just before I lost a dear friend.
I fully credit their presences as part of how I navigated these circumstances. I do not believe they caused them. I cannot imagine how I would have gotten through those experiences without them.
Embracing a Goddess does not create an experience, and avoiding a Goddess doesn’t prevent an experience.
But denying a so-called “Scary” Goddess might deny us an invaluable guide in navigating the inevitable.
But what do YOU think?
