I’ll be honest. I had SO MUCH FUN writing Pentacle: The Shape Of Power.
It’s not that I didn’t enjoy writing my other books. But they come with a fair share of questions: Am I presenting this goddess in a respectful way? Have I offered proper context? Will this be helpful or alienating to readers? And a fair share of revisiting my own heartbreaks in my personal story as well.
Not this one! This one was ALLLLLL nerd-dom, all the time.
I love research. I love learning things. I love being surprised by the things I learn. And as I told the lovely Witches of Cauldron Her Daddy podcast, I was surprised by lots of things in researching Pentacle. But here are the three things that surprised me, most:
1.) Pentagrams appeared in Mesopotamian hieroglyphs
It’s not clear exactly what they were meant to symbolize, but many think they may have meant to represent individual stars or constellations. Perhaps I shouldn’t have been surprised…but I was! This shape has been around for so, so long!
2.) Pentagrams and pentacles may have been carved into Churches as protective talismans
While it’s also possible that the star-shaped designs might have indicated a specific masonic guild, it’s also thought that the pentagram and pentacle was not a symbol of Witchcraft or demonology to the Church—but one that would protect it from such forces. Quite a switch!
3.) Tens of thousands of people tried to levitate the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
I’d heard rumors of the “Yippies” attempting to levitate the Pentagon during the Vietnam war. But as part of my research into how the pentacle shows up in modern culture, I found myself digging into why the shape shows up in the governmental buildings of the USA so very often, which led me down a powerful rabbit hole into this phenomenal act of theatrical ritual. It wasn’t a joke. It was a massive, intentional act performed calling for the end of a horrific war. Did they succeed? I wasn’t there…I can’t say! But I do believe it levitated the message that the war needed to end. And the best part??? I got to interview a woman who was there!
