Let’s be honest. We’re hearing, seeing, and experiencing a lot of awful these days.

If you’re feeling activated, triggered, or just plain upset by the happenings of the current timeline, the solution is NOT turning away. It doesn’t solve the issue and it doesn’t make us feel better. It only forces the sorrow down deeper.

Yet ruminating on it doesn’t solve the issue, and it can keep us from living fully into our present lives.

This simple ritual can help ground sorrow.

It acknowledges the effect the current events are having on us, while giving us enough space from it to move throughout our day.

What you’ll need:

A crystal, stone, or rock. The type doesn’t matter. It can be a piece of gravel from the parking lot if that’s what’s available!

A piece of paper. Any size will do.

A small bowl, cup, or other container. It only needs to be big enough to hold the stone and the paper. It can even be tupperware container, if that helps!

With the stone in your hand, say the following or repeat in your mind:

Stone of earth,

Earth’s cold bone,

Hold this sorrow while I roam.

Then, describe to the stone what is breaking your heart. This can be aloud or in your thoughts.

Write on the paper a simple sentence describing the situation(s) e.g., “The children in Gaza” and/or “Jane Doe.” Drawing an image is okay, too. If you’re too upset to write or draw, just scribble. The ritual will understand.

Place the paper in the bowl with the stone on top of it. With your hand on the bowl, breathe deeply and envision your sorrow flowing down your arm and onto the stone, paper, and bowl. Know that it is holding the bulk of your sorrow. Remember that the stone has endured far more pressure through millions of years of existence than you could ever push onto it in one ritual.

As you move through your day, if the sorrow starts to creep up and prevent you from doing what you need to do, stop and envision the stone. Send the sorrow to it from wherever you are.

At the end of the day, take a moment with the stone and the sorrow it has collected. Thank the stone. Bless the sorrow. Feeling it is part of what makes us human!

Do this every day for as long as you need to.

When you feel you no longer need its support, if it’s a simply stone or piece of gravel, thank it one more time and toss it in a river. If it’s a crystal you’d like to keep, consider running it under a faucet (check to be sure the crystal does not dissolve in water before doing so) to release the sorrow from it.

The paper can be burned, dissolved, or torn up and recycled.

Be well and good to yourself. <3
