My seven-year infertility journey was one of the darkest chapters of my life.

This description probably sounds cliche, but it was like walking down a pitch-black and unfamiliar hallway. I didn’t know where I was going. I didn’t know when the darkness would end. I was scared. I was heartbroken.

In the midst of that journey, I wrote my book on Hekate. Hekate’s associations as a Goddess of people struggling with fertility, but also being the torchbearer.

During my dark journey, Hekate was my light.

Yet the world around me called Hekate a “Goddess of Darkness.”

This confused me. Her mythology, and my own experience, both revealed her as a Goddess involved with light.

Hekate comes to Demeter to help her find Demeter with “a light ablaze in her hands.” She is also associated with the moon, and its being a light in the dark. She is described as carrying a torch into both the realms of Olympus and the realms of earth.

It’s less accurate to say Hekate is a “Goddess of Darkness.”

A more accurate description would be “A Light In The Darkness.”

In my experience, Hekate does not solve problems. Instead, she illuminates a path to finding an answer. She could not release Persephone from her surely often-troubled marriage. But she was able to stand beside her and be a light in the darkness.

She doesn’t banish the dark. But she creates illumination within it.

If you are going through a dark time, this prayer can help Hekate’s light find you:

Lady in the Dark,
Beacon of the Night,
The serpent-touched Torchbearer,
As I walk this bleak time,
Illuminate my sight as I navigate my plight.

Use this prayer:

  • At night before bed…OR in the morning before dawn–bringing light into the dark part of the day.
  • At crossroads or intersections (which are sacred sites to Hekate), as you navigate this crossroads in your life.
  • When feeling fearful about the next chapter, dedicate a specific candle to Hekate. Light it when you feel that fear, say this prayer to the flame.

Remember: Hekate is not the source of darkness. She is the source of light IN the darkness.

If your journey is taking you through the darkness, may this working help you navigate it.
