Yesterday, I sat down to write today’s “Tarot Tutorial.” And I couldn’t.

A Minnesota woman’s face kept floating through my mind. As did the cold memories sparked by the anniversary of January 6, 2021. As did the news from Venezuela, and maybe Greenland, too. As did more and more messages from my friends abroad, all saying something like, “u ok?”

What was I doing trying to write a little Substack with a helpful little Tarot spread?Flipping little cards. Coming up with cute little sayings about symbolism. Encouraging little reflections in everyone else’s little journals.

Is there even a point will all of (*gestures wildly*) this going on?

I sat in the dark with my question. I sat at my altar with a candle. I lay down in bed and listened to my little one’s deep and peaceful breath, oblivious in their sleep.

And the answer came.

Yes.

In a time like this, a craft like Tarot is anything but frivolous.

At this point in time, those in power:

Want to define the truth. Tarot connects you with what YOU know to be true.

Tell you to doubt what you’ve seen or heard. Tarot relies on the practice of OBSERVATION. It engages trust in your experiences: what YOU see and hear, as well as feel, and more.

Trust THEM, not each other, and certainly not ourselves. Tarot engages trust with one another, when we read for each other, and with ourselves when we read on our own.

Want people to blindly believe in a “higher” authority. Tarot reminds us that we are each our own highest authority.

Want you to believe that they know all, and you know nothing. Tarot will remind you that YOU are the authority of your knowledge.

Practicing Tarot practices personal power.

That is ANYTHING but frivolous.
