Reading the Tarot for the question: How can I improve my current relationship?

When people come to me with relationship questions, they almost always apologize.

“Listen,” I almost always reply. “Questions about relationships have kept Tarot readers in business for 600 years.”

One of the most common questions I get is “How can I improve my current relationship?”

I love these questions for Tarot as they’re more active than passive. They treat the Tarot as the tool for living it can be, rather than only the oracular tool it’s often made to be. If this is your question, too, here is what the cards you pull might be saying what you’ll need to improve your relationship:

Cups: Emotional Honesty, Kindness, Forgiveness

Wands: Chemistry—passion. A hot night out or a spicy night in! Also, exploring a common hobby together.

Swords: Addressing conflict, having it all out. Possibly needing a third party intervention e.g., mediator or counselor.

Pentacles: Working on the practical—addressing financial concerns, fixing up the house and home, etc.

Major Arcana: Working through the life lesson together as reflected in the Major Arcana card.

A helpful exercise is to draw two cards, building the messages of each one into a single message. See example below! For the purposes of this practice, utilize only upright cards.

5 of Wands and The Star:

5 of Wands: Conflict and passions. The Star: Hopes and Dreams
Together, this means conflicting passions/desires can be solved by focusing on a collective big picture. Find that common goal!

The Tower and The Chariot:

The Tower: Upheaval, collapse. The Chariot: Forward movement.

Together, whatever devastating thing that shook the relationship can be left behind if both parties remain committed to looking toward the future.

4 of Pentacles and 8 of Wands

4 of Pentacles: Holding on for dear life. 8 of Swords: Bound up and restrained.

This one may be a little tricky, as both cards show a bit of stagnation. In that case, it can be helpful to look at other things they have in common. The 4 of Pentacles could ease their grasp and potentially ease their mind as a result. The character in in the 8 of Swords is free to go, if only they knew that was the case. In this pairing, it’s possible that both/all parties would do well to look for ways they could each/all compromise and make room for others.
