How to cast spells without them backfiring? How to cast Magickal spells? How to cast a powerful Witch’s spell?

If you asked for a coffee from your barista, would you:

  • A.) Lean over the counter, tell them exactly how to do the foam, which spoon to use, and exactly which to-go cup to put it in? Would you argue over which of the identical to-go lids to put on there, and which sharpie to use to write you name on the cup? Or..
  • B.) Place your order, perhaps with a couple of modification requests, and stand back while they complete the order?

My guess, or HOPE, is that you’d take option b! Most people (although I’m sure there are baristas out there who have experienced column A customers), would pick option B. They would place their order and then step aside while the barista does their work.

However, if the Universe were a barista, many Witches would find themselves in column A.

What Do You Mean, Courtney???

By no means do I believe the Universe an ethereal barista. But why is it we trust our baristas to do the work we ask of them…but we don’t offer the Universe the same trust?

However, when we put our work out there, we must trust how it’s going to come through.

Okay. Personal story time.

Years ago, I cast a love spell for myself.

I lit a candle, went into a meditation, and said to the Spirits: “I want love. I want the person to live in this neighborhood. I want this person to be between the ages of 25 and 35. I want them to be child-free now, but want kids someday. I want them to want a relationship now, but marriage someday. I want them to be spiritual. I want us to have great chemistry.” Within a month, I’d met that exact person: 30 years old, with all of the other qualities I’d asked for. The problem? I’d neglected to ask for honesty. And fidelity. They were already in a marriage-track relationship that they “conveniently forgot” to mention. It ended explosively.

I tried again.

Panicked and burned by my previous experience, I cast another love spell with the intention: “I want a man who will go to parties with me wear a top hat and a coat with tails.” Within a week, I met a very nice man who not only was a regular party go-er at some of the coolest places in NYC, he personally made his OWN top-hat and coattails! The problem? We had zero chemistry and didn’t want the same things. We made good friends, but not partners or lovers.

My problem? I was TELLING the Universe what to do, instead of focusing on my ultimate intention.

Too often, a Witch’s Magick fails because they worry more about how the spell will manifest than what or whether it will. Too often, they waste powerful energy telling the Universe how to do its work.

For example, many Witches who would like increased prosperity might encode their spells with: “I want to bring money into my life. But I don’t want anyone harmed or inconvenienced by it. And I want it to come through an increase in my paycheck of $$$, and I want it come by THIS date.” Sounds reasonable, right? But the more prescriptive we get, the less likely we are to get what we asked for.

But what if the Universe has an even easier method in mind? What if it wants to give you MORE prosperity than what you asked for? What if the Spirits you’re working with get annoyed that you’re telling them how to do their job and just decide to blow up your whole plan?

Sometimes, Witches are afraid of the Universe’s methods. They worry that if they ask the Universe for money, EVERYONE WILL DIE and they’ll have all of their inherited cash, but will be alone and guilty. In over two decades of Witchcraft, I have never seen that happen. I have, however, seen many spells go awry because someone (like I did), left out a few key things in their “spell prescription,” or didn’t include enough things.

When My Love Spell Worked

Instead of micro-managing the Universe, when I finally cast a spell with a simple but clear intention: “I am ready to meet my partner. Bring me the right one,” I met someone within a month that to this day was my longest and most serious relationship.

And the next time I do such a spell, I will be using this method: Clear with my goals, but not prescriptive.
