How to work with a Dark Goddess? What is a Dark Goddess? Who is the Goddess of Darkness?

Last week, I wrapped my Dark Goddess series with an exceptional group of people. As always, I know I learned far more from them than they did from me and for that I am so very, very grateful!

Here are a few things I learned in this most recent journey. Maybe there’s something here for you, too!

The Importance Of Doubt

“Is this real?” “Am I making it up?” “Did this really happen?” These are the questions people ask themselves, showing that we, collectively, are programmed to doubt ourselves. But then, so many of us feel we need to eliminate all doubt before we can even begin a practice. It’s an impossible double-standard!

Doubt is not a problem. You know who has no doubts at all? A caustic cult leader (Pick one. Any one….).

Having some doubt keeps us grounded. But doubt should not keep us from exploring a practice. Maybe our experiences were real, maybe they were imagined…but imagined experiences can be life-changing, and real experiences may not change us at all. We do not need to prove something’s reality to learn something from the experience.

Whether or not an experience is “real” is not the point. The point is whether we allow it to deepen our connection to our soul.

The Necessity Of Sacrifice

A spiritual journey shouldn’t always be easy, or comfortable. A level of exertion leads to deeper satisfaction.

Think of it like this: How satisfying is the view at the end of the hike if there isn’t at least some sweat shed along the way? How does the gratification of seeing people enjoy a meal you spent hours preparing compare to the gratification of seeing someone eat a boloney sandwich you slapped together in 30 seconds? Or, the fulfillment of seeing a loved one open a gift you put great thought and effort into acquiring for them, versus a trinket you picked up at a gas station?

Effort creates fulfillment. That’s true in spiritual practice as well!

But sacrifice does NOT mean martyrdom. We do not need to harm ourselves, our finances, or our relationships to deepen a spiritual practice. But a few hours of volunteer work on a Saturday morning instead of sleeping in could be one example of a potential offering to a Goddess. So could clearing out a corner of a cluttered bedroom to make space for an altar. It should be reasonable and should not harm you or your family, but it shouldn’t be easy-peasy either!

Even a modest sacrifice opens the door to a greater relationship with the Divine.

Joy In Practice. Practice in Joy.

Hey, not everything need be hard. Offerings to the Divine can be something you love to do as well! Do you love to cook? Cook for people in the name of your Goddess! Do you love to sing? Sing to your Goddess! Do you love walks? Use a walk as a time to connect with her!

Patriarchal religions have taught us that the only true way to honor the Divine is to suffer. While some discomfort can ultimately lead to a satisfying connection, connecting with the Divine ought to not only be difficult and does NOT need to be outright painful.

Creating space for joy with the Divine is not only a beautiful way to honor them, but it’s likely to allow you to keep the Divine connection going.

I really want to thank everyone who attended my Dark Goddesses series! I learned so, so much from you all. <3
