What was Brigid the Goddess of? What does Brigid symbolize? How do you know if Brigid is calling you? What is the power of the Goddess Brigid?

“The Coming of Bride” by John Duncan, 1917
Far too often, I’ve heard people say that they don’t want to know the Goddess Brigid because they “only work with scary Goddesses.” I’ve also heard far too many people say they’re drawn to the Goddess Brigid because she “seems nice.”
The truth: ALL Deities have scary sides.
In my experience, there are no “scary” Deities or “nicer” Deities.
Every Deity, regardless of their reputation, has the potential to bless.
And every Deity also has the potential to destroy.
Brigid is no exception.
Why is Brigid so often considered a “nicer” Deity? Perhaps it’s her connection with husbandry (aw….cute little cows and fuzzy sheep!). Maybe it’s her being a midwife (aw….squishy little babies!). Maybe it’s being connected with spring (snowdrops! sunshine!)
But have you ever been around cows or sheep??? They can F*** a person up!!! Midwives are some of the toughest, most no-nonsense people out there and for good reason…they straddle life and death in their work. And spring??? Come on. Spring, especially early spring (which is Brigid’s true domain) brings some of the nastiest weather: Blizzards, floods, ice storms, wicked allergies…it’s all there.
Brigid also…
- Stole her rich dad’s sword and gave it to someone in need
- Tricked a mean Bishop out of a greedy land grab.
- Cursed someone who was unkind to his friend.
- Helped someone end an unwanted pregnancy
- Lost her son to an act of treachery and is said to have invented keening
- Is connected with blacksmiths. Do you have any idea how much physical power and mental focus it takes to do blacksmith work??? SO MUCH.

Brigid is also connected with writers. And writers are some of the wildest artists out there.
We may spend more time at our computers than roaming the streets and may don sweatpants more than leather (sometimes…), but do you have any idea what goes on in a writer’s head???
It takes one hellava Goddess to hold dominion over writers!
Which is why I’m starting this new course in collaboration with native Irish Brigid expert Orlagh Minxie Costello!
