“I want to connect with a Goddess…but I’m afraid.”
I hear this over and over again from would-be devotees of Dark Goddesses. With the world at a cross-roads, more people are being called to Goddesses of death, warfare, destruction, and also rebirth such as Hekate, The Morrigan, Lilith, Kali, and more.
It’s natural to fear these Goddesses. It’s natural to fear ANY Goddess. Mythology is full of mortals who trembled in fear before Goddesses…even when those Goddesses are showing up to help!
Some of the fears I hear include:
- “Will the Goddess reject me?”
- “What if I do something wrong and upset her?”
- “What if my religious upbringing was right and I end up in Hell?”
The second question I often get is: “How can I overcome my fears of this Goddess?”
My answer: “You don’t.”
Fear is not a problem. Fear is information.
When we fear rejection, it’s often because we’ve experienced its pain. If we fear doing something “wrong,” it could be because we’ve experienced punishment for making mistakes (innocent or not). And if we fear religious retribution, it may be because of programming in our youth.
Fear can show us places that may need healing. It can also show us thought patterns that could be re-wired. Fear has the power to teach us about ourselves.
Fear is not a problem to be solved. But it shouldn’t make our decisions for us.
In that, you can approach a Deity while you still have fear. Having fears does not mean you should not do something.
On a Dark Goddess path, exploring our fears can help us both understand ourselves better AND connect with the Goddess that calls us.
Fear And The Dark Goddess:
An Exercise From Dark Goddesses: Building A Spiritual Relationship With A Dark Goddess
Before you go to bed, spend ten minutes writing a letter to the Goddess you think may be calling you.
In the letter, list the following:
- Why you feel called to Her.
- What elements of Her you are curious about.
- List every fear you have of embarking on this practice with Her.
- Finally, detail every thing that is going on in your life.
Fold the letter towards yourself and sleep with it either under your pillow or near your bed. Set your alarm to get up a few minutes before you normally would.
First thing in the morning, before you do anything (no teeth brushing, no coffee, no ciggys), sit down and begin writing a letter to yourself, on behalf of the Goddess. The tricky part here is to let the words come to you no matter what. They may not make a lot of sense. You may only write your name over and over or a bunch of seemingly gobbly-gook. But continue writing until your fears are addressed.
A note: Messages from Goddesses usually lead to more questions than answers at first. Put your letter away in a safe place and refer to it again in a week’s time. Review it and explore how your relationship to your fears has changed since you did the exercise.
