In the days that followed my loss, I sat on the couch and stared at nothing.
The tiny person who had so quickly shaped my world was suddenly gone. What would my world be, now? It felt like nothing. There was no world without that little person.
Meanwhile, my phone blinked with Instagram tags, praising my new Hekate book. My words helped people connect with a Goddess and find themselves as a Witch, readers said.
Good for you, I silently responded to the praise. Not for me.
Our altar sat cold and neglected. The Gods were silent.
Witchcraft was suddenly meaningless.
The moment of loss is surreal. Is it really happening? We search for clues that it’s all a terrible dream. It couldn’t be happening to us.This kind of loss is what happens to other people.
Except it didn’t. Our loss happened to us.
But why?
Aren’t we Witches whose powers should have prevented this from happening?
Did our protection spells fail? Were we cursed by an enemy? Where were the gods, guiding spirits, and ancestors? Were they asleep at the wheel? Did they cause this for some cruel, unknowable reason? Were they ever there at all?
What now?
As a grieving Witch, these just a few of the things you may find yourself wondering.
You may even feel betrayed by your path. These thoughts and feelings are normal reactions to grief and you are not alone in having them.
It is also natural to wonder why the loss happened, and it may be tempting to solve the “why.” You may find yourself trying to heal your grief as quickly as possible through spells, rituals, and meditations.
But the early days of loss are a time of spiritual emergency. There will be urgent things that will need your attention: logistical, emotional, both or more. Your questions will wait, and you may ponder them for years.
In the immediate aftermath of the loss, the goal is to simply get through the moments.
