Listen. I don’t claim to know everything about Hekate, and I certainly won’t pretend to know Hekate’s Will. But I did write a book about her, so I do know a few things. And I keep seeing the same false things pop up on my feeds and my Mars in Gemini CANNOT keep my mouth shut.

Here we go…

Claim: “Once You Accept Hekate…THERE IS NO ESCAPE.”
FALSE. Plenty of people who have gentle, low-touch relationships with this powerful Goddess and they are not “bound” to anything, myself included. Your relationship with Deity will be what you make it.
That being said…
A Truth: If you make a contract with a Deity and you do not follow through, they will collect. If you promise Hekate that you will be devoted to her for life and will honor no other Gods except her, and a few years later you forget that promise and start devoted yourself to other Deities in a similar way, she may appear wanting a word.
Claim: “You must be biologically female to connect with Hekate.”
FALSE. In Ancient Greece and many peer cultures, a multitude of genders were widely accepted. In fact, eunuch clergy led one of Hekate’s most sacred fertility rituals. While we don’t know whether these individuals voluntarily became eunuchs or whether this was forced upon them, it does indicate that a kind of gender non-conformity was considered integral to Hekate worship in the ancient days.
A truth: Some of the most wonderful, powerful devotees of Hekate that I have ever met are not assigned female at birth. While there are plenty of women who are excellent Hekate devotees, I cannot count the number of absolutely wonderful devotees are men, non-binary persons, trans persons, trans women, and more that I have met in my journey. Because Hekate is a devotee of liminal spaces and those who don’t fit the normal mould, it makes perfect sense that she would happily receipt devotion from a myriad of gender identities.
Claim: “You must abandon all fear before you can connect with Hekate”
FALSE: People in mythology who approached Hekate were friggin’ terrified. She’s a Patroness of scary things. The “hero” Jason ran away when he summoned her. Heck, even Zeus was probably afraid of her. No where in her mythology does she demand complete absence of fear before approaching her.
A Truth: Deities are scary, but fear is not a problem, is it a sign that you’re “not ready”. Fear is simply information. While we don’t want to let fear rule our choices, having some fear is part of being human and addressing it is not a prerequisite to deepening a relationship with a Deity.
There. I said it.
