How to work with a Dark Goddess? What are the qualities of the Dark Goddess? How to work with Dark Goddess energy?

My last post was a hit. Let’s do it again!

The internet is full of dire warnings about and sanitations of “Dark Goddesses.” Let’s unravel some of that “Dark Fluff!”

Quick clarifier: “Dark Goddess” has no official definition.

“Dark” is a label commonly assigned to Goddesses associated with death, warfare, under-worldly realms, or even violence. Common examples include Hekate, The Morrigan, Lilith, Kali, among many, many others. These Goddesses have immense stories of power and incredible legacies of changing lives.

Still, some of their more sensational attributes lead to inaccurate opinions…

Popular Opinion: “Dark Goddesses Are Evil.”

Unpopular Reality: Nope.

A Goddess may be connected with a terrifying aspect of life, but on closer look at their myths, they are rarely the cause of the strife. Even if and when they are, a closer look at the cultural context of the myth will likely reveal that the terrifying expression of the Goddess was a reflection of the lived experience of the people who first formed the myth. E.g., Goddesses who have reputations for causing death likely were revered by a people who experienced a period of famine or disease.

Popular Opinion: “Dark Goddesses Are Good, Just Misunderstood.”

Unpopular Reality: Again, nope.

Hey, read the thing above! Dark Goddesses may not be the evil beings many people say they are, but nor are they warm-hearted ladies with bad, undeserved reputations. These Goddesses are complicated. After all, they represent complicated aspects of life!

Popular Opinion: “They Demand Full Devotion Or They Will Destroy You”

Unpopular Reality: There Is No Objective Requirement For Goddess Devotion.

While some people do choose to devote their Spiritual journey to a particular Dark Goddess, others simply pray to them once in a while with no ill effects! Still others may simply read a myth and take some inspiration from it. There is no objective scale of devotion, and certainly no punishment for not “measuring up”. That thinking is most likely unresolved religious trauma!

That being said, do keep your promises to them…Goddesses in general don’t like broken promises.

Popular Opinion: “They will wreck your life.”

Unpopular Reality: They may change things. It may be jarring. But if they do, it will be good in the end.

In my own personal and witnessed experience, when you allow a Goddess (no matter their reputation) into your life, they will likely rearrange things. More specifically, they will remove things from your life that aren’t good for you. The transition may be jarring and it may feel like they’re wrecking your life, but you end up better for it on the other side. Alternatively, the Goddess may appear in your life just before you face a big trial. Maybe they are showing up to help you through that time. Maybe you intuitively knew the rough time was coming and felt drawn to a Goddess who knew how to navigate it.

Building a deep, authentic relationship with a “Dark Goddess” does not have to be complicated or scary. Nor does it mean embracing an artificial aesthetic. These magnanimous Deities who have held patronage over the greatest challenges and mysteries of lived experience for thousands of years still have things to teach us.
