Tarot Tutorials: One Upright…Many Reversed?

You’re doing a reading and one card comes out upright…while ALL of the others appear Reversed! Ack! What in the world does it mean???

First of all, if you get a bunch of Reversed cards in a reading, it may mean:

  • Your life is upside down. Querents who are in the process of a move, job change, divorce, or other life-changing event may get more Reversed cards. Their life is in flux! It makes sense that some many cards would also be in a “flux” position!
  • You’re stuck or at a crossroads. Numerous Reversed cards can indicate an overall block in the querent’s journey.
  • What NOT to pay attention to. When most of the cards are Reversed, it can be a call to action to tell the querent that they are paying attention to the wrong things and may need to change their focus.

In most cases, a single upright card among several Reversed cards is a big call to action for the querent.

See example below for a hypothetical querent, using my “Roots Of The Problem” spread. This querent is struggling to fix some communication issues with their girlfriend.

The Code:

1.) Past history of the situation
2.) Current state of the situation
3.) Future circumstances if situation is not resolved
4.) What caused the problem in the first place
5 & 6.) Deeper issues connected to the root of the problem
7.) Tool(s) to remove the problem

The Reading In Action:

1.) Past history of the situation: 10 of Swords Reversed. Something is not resolved. It’s likely that the querent and girlfriend are still unable to resolve something that may have happened long ago.

2.) Current state of the situation: Page of Wands Reversed.
Stalemate. This card indicates being out of ideas. They literally don’t know what to do going forward.

3.) Future circumstances if situation is not resolved: 9 of Cups Reversed.
Increased discomfort and animosity between them. They need to find a solution if they want this relationship to thrive.

4.) What caused the problem in the first place: Knight of Cups Reversed.
When upright, this Knight is the champion of deep feelings. Reversed, he is cold and insensitive, even mean. It’s likely that lack of sensitivity on both parts led these two into this place.

5 & 6.) Deeper issues connected to the root of the problem: Justice Reversed and 3 of Pentacles.
Justice Reversed is a card of imbalance. This relationship has not been on even footing, or extenuating circumstances kept things shaky between the two of them. The 3 of Pentacles is a card of stability. Both parties likely have struggled with instability in the past (perhaps in their childhoods) which lead them to struggle when the relationship is uncertain.

7.) Tool(s) to remove the problem: 8 of Wands Reversed.
Tempers are probably very hot right now. Taking time off and space from one another is likely key.

The One Upright: 3 of Pentacles

With the 3 of Pentacles being a card in the deep roots area and representing security, this reading seems to be saying that both parties are bringing long-held fears about insecurity in the home to the relationship. It may be time for each of them to sit down with their therapists and explore that fear. If this relationship has any shot at healing, healing this child-hood wound rooted in shaky foundations must be explored.
