Witchcraft is a practice and a way of life.
In my classes and with my private clients, I hear many wise, experienced Witches and Magickally-minded folx criticize themselves for “not doing enough” with their Witchcraft.
The Raw Truth: There is no “enough.”
There is either doing Witchcraft or not doing Witchcraft.
Because Witchcraft is both a practice and a way of life, practicing Witchcraft will change with the ebbs and flows of one’s life.
It’s like exercise…
Not everyone can be a triathlete, or wants to be (I certainly don’t!). But I do like to exercise as I feel good after moving, especially outside. When I lived in New York City, exercise was automatic part of as I was constantly running for the subway and frequently releasing rage at the romance-dujour on the elliptical at my job’s gym. Then, working from home in Oregon, I took barre and yoga classes, and trekked daily with my dog just to get out of the friggin’ house. Now that I’m a work-at-home parent of a toddler, most of my exercise is pushing a stroller to my kiddo’s various activities. It may not be as intentional, but activity it still is.
Along those lines, my Witchcraft has had many of different shapes, from slap-dashed spells between college classes, to leading 300 person rituals in Battery Park, to now squeezing in prayers to the land spirits while my little one plays in the yard. Like my exercise, my Witchcraft may not be as focused as it once was, but it still plays a role in my life.
As a Witch’s life changes, so does their Witchcraft practice.
Sometimes a life will provide more opportunity, or even more need, for a Witchcraft practice. Other times, it won’t have that opportunity…or even that need?
Instead of asking if you’re doing “enough” Witchcraft, try asking yourself:
- Do I feel fulfilled by my Witchcraft practice? If you can honestly say yes, wonderful! If no, is it that you need to practice “more,” or would a different approach be more fulfilling? As in, instead of a complicated ritual, would a quiet walk in the park alone offer fulfillment…or vice versa?
- Do I need to practice more, or do I need more time to myself? A Witchcraft practice can be its own form of self-care, but if you don’t have the energy to practice and just want to nap, you’re not being a “bad Witch.” You’re just a tired one!
- What results am I expecting, and are they reasonable? Witchcraft, like anything else, isn’t a uniform experience. Some Magickal experiences are jarring and profound. Others are quiet, but no less profound. Sometimes, we may not even recognize a Magickal experience until we look at it in retrospect. Are you open to how your Magickal experiences reveal themselves, or are you putting pressure on them to provide a specific, but possibly unrealistic, outcome each time?
If you want to practice but feel a bit stuck, this week I’m offering five easy and Magickal things you can do this week—one thing every day. Join any paid level of The Cauldron Calling to get access to this, right away!
