You have a big, complicated question for the Tarot, and the reader pops out a single card. Wait…what? Aren’t you supposed to get a reading reading???

Can someone really do a whole Tarot reading with one single card?

The short answer: ABSOLUTELY YES!

The Tarot is rich with symbols, images, history, and personal interpretation. Honestly, you could take one single card and use it to answer every question you ever have going forward for the Tarot, and still have a different answer every time!

More cards can provide more insight, but more cards (or too many cards) can also create confusion.

Using only one card in a Tarot reading can offer rich, clear answers to even complicated questions.

Benefits of a single-card reading:

  • Minimizes confusion and overwhelm by not adding too many cards to the mix
  • Increases the depth of the messages
  • helps with overall understanding of the Tarot

But how do you get a good level of detail from only one card?

If you are using only one card in your Tarot reading, begin by letting yourself fall into its imagery. For this reason, it’s best to do single-card readings with a deck that offers a great deal of richness or story in its artwork. Here are some of the questions you may want to explore when finding your answer in a single card:

  • If the card depicts a character, what is their demeanor? If there are several characters, are they in harmony, conflict, or otherwise?
  • Note the warmth or coolness of the colors. Do these colors indicate joy, sadness, warmth, chill, or something else?
  • What’s the activity level of the story in the card? Does it indicate a peaceful setting? An exciting one? One of danger?
  • Do things in the card seem to be flourishing or waning?
  • If you could tell the story of the card to someone who cannot see it, what would the story say?
  • What warnings would you offer the characters or scene?

Good questions for single-card readings:

  • General overview e.g., “How are things going at my job?”
  • Best Course Of Action
  • “What Can I expect next?”
  • Timing of future events

Single card readings are not as helpful with:

  • Yes/No Questions. These are typically better answered with a three-card spread.
  • Past/Present/Future spreads. Again, better answered with three cards.
