Want to know how to read Tarot cards? How should a beginner read Tarot cards? Can you teach yourself to read Tarot cards? What are the rules of Tarot card meanings?
I’ve been reading Tarot for almost (gulp) 30 years and here is what I know…
To be proficient at Tarot, learn these four things:
1.) “The Fool’s Journey”
When we look at the Major Arcana (The Fool-The World, commonly called “The Fool’s Journey”) as a story, we easily see parallels in our most beloved tales—think, The Wizard of Oz or Lord of the Rings—AND in our personal stories. When we develop natural associations with these universal characters and experiences, we can easily understand them appear in a reading.
2.) The “Pip” Stories
The Minor Arcana (the numbered cards of the Cups, Wands, Swords, and Pentacles, sometimes called the “Pip” cards) illustrates ordinary experiences, such as good news, conflicts, work, love, etc. The best Tarot decks for intuitive reading include excellent stories on the Pip cards. By exploring the stories in each card, we can unveil the messages the Tarot has about our specific situations.
3.) The Court “Masks”
If the Fool’s Journey are moments and archetypes, and Pip Stories are the things we navigate, the Court Cards (Pages, Knights, Queens, and Kings) are the roles we are called to play in our relationships, work, friendships, and more. Understanding how these cards can fit every person, including ourselves, helps us use the Tarot to define our best course of action in any given situation.
4.) Finding the Tarot’s Voice
You’ve developed a relationship with the cards…now what? Knowing each of the cards without knowing how they can relate to one another is like learning a language by memorizing the language’s dictionary. It’s the same with Tarot. The final step in becoming a proficient Tarot reader is learning to understand the context in which each card appears.
Sound like a lot? It’s really not!
