I am having THE BEST time facilitating Brigid for Writers (alongside the spectacular Orlagh Minxie Costello!). I am getting far more from the participants than they are getting from me. This past week, we explored the myth of the Brigid’s Cross.
In this beautiful Irish myth, St. Brigid offered last rites to a dying man by weaving a cross from the rushes on the floor of the man’s hut. Orlagh shared with us many perspectives on what that myth might mean to a modern person, but one major message was “Use what you have.” St. Brigid didn’t go off to find “the best” items to help this man. Instead, she leaned into practicality and collected what was at her fingertips, as Spirit can be found wherever there is intent and desire.
For Witches and other Magickally-minded people, this is a lesson in how we can practice our Magick. We don’t need to buy stuff to cast powerful spells. We can use whatever we have in the house. We don’t need to look up the perfect spell (although others’ spells can be very inspiring!). We can make one up!
But this idea of “using what you have” is bigger than just stuff.
Witches are less often less concerned with the “right” color of candles or the “best” kind of crystals. Rather, they more concerned with having sufficient time, energy, or focus to do their Magick. Here too, Brigid’s message still applies.
If you, the Witch, are your own best Magickal tool, stop wishing for a “less-busy Witch.” Or a “less-distracted Witch.” Or a “More Knowledgeable Witch.” Naturally, reducing your own busy-ness, or increasing your mental focus or knowledge is a great thing to do for your overall health, don’t wait until those things are “perfect” before doing your Magick.
YOU are your most powerful Magickal tool. Use the YOU you have, not the YOU you wish to be.
You don’t need to find time. Use the time you have (even if it’s three minutes).
You don’t need an uncluttered, undistracted mind. Use the mind you have right now.
You don’t need more knowledge. Use the knowledge you have.
And most of all…
You don’t need permission. You ARE the permission.
